Post digging and setting methods Woodlyn, PA

Types of Fences Woodlyn, PA

In the quaint community of Woodlyn, PA, setting wooden posts is an essential skill for homeowners and garden enthusiasts alike. The process demands precision and care to ensure a sturdy foundation for fences, decks, or arbors. Given the unique landscape and climate of Pennsylvania, there are several methods preferred by locals that may not be common elsewhere.

One such technique involves pre-digging holes before inserting the posts. This preliminary step might seem like an added task but it allows for adjustments to be made easily if you encounter unexpected subterranean obstacles like rocks or dense clay layers which are prevalent in this region.

The depth of the hole is also crucial; typically, one-third of the post's length should be submerged underground to provide sufficient anchorage. In Woodlyn, where winter frosts can penetrate deeply into soil, going even deeper can prevent heaving caused by freeze-thaw cycles.

The 'tamping' method follows excavation: placing a few inches of gravel at the base of each hole ensures proper drainage thereby reducing wood rot over time. After positioning the post in its hole, it's vital to tamp down soil incrementally while adding it back around the post guaranteeing minimal air pockets and maximum stability.

An alternative approach popular in Woodlyn utilizes concrete footings. Pouring mixed cement into holes around posts creates incredibly firm bases that resist shifting due to water or wind pressure. However, this requires precise leveling as concrete sets quickly leaving little room for error once poured.

Innovative residents sometimes opt for metal spikes driven directly into ground with sledgehammers - these 'post anchors' eliminate digging altogether though they're generally better suited for lighter structures given their less robust hold compared to traditional methods.

Wood preservatives are often applied as well especially considering Pennsylvania's humid summers which foster decay-causing fungi. These treatments help prolong lifespan of wooden installations significantly making them worth initial investment despite additional costs upfront.

No matter which method Woodlyn’s inhabitants choose professional execution remains paramount; poor installation can lead to leaning structures or complete collapse under stress from environmental factors or weight loads they bear. Thus patience attention detail - coupled with knowledge local conditions - stands out as key successful post setting within charming confines Woodlyn PA ensuring lasting quality whatever project undertaken within its borders.

Angi provided me with several contractors, I received estimates but chose Philz Landscaping (even after coming in higher) because he satisfied with his estimate and start date our fervent desire to complete the project before winter set in. Alex, Javier set the example of professionalism in setting up the area to remove fencing and gate, installed vinyl fence with double gate (assisted by Carlos), removed all debris, left my yard spotless and we are extremely satisfied with the new fence and gate. Questions we had were answered (Helena, Phil) promptly and Alex, Javier went above and beyond ensuring my wife’s concerns were taken care of; I want again to Thank the team at Philz Landscaping and recommend highly to perform your project.

Had Phil and his workers come by my house to work on the backyard in May this year. Eliminate weeds, regrade soil and replant grass seed. 158 feet worth of backyard which he estimated $1600 to do. There was a hiccup with his office and scheduling and he wasn't even aware of the set date in mid-May. He rescheduled for the week after and took off $100 for inconvenience. His crew shows up and does the job and weeks after, grass grew....but not fully in corners of the yard. I called him back, voicemail immediately. Got in touch with his office and they said they would pass the message. His response times are atrocious and I told him about the patches in the grass. He says "no problem I'll send guys to evaluate and re-seed". They show up and do the job again. By mid-July, weeds are growing in very strong and grass is dying at exceedingly high rate despite me watering. I called him back and he says "that's odd, I'll come by this afternoon or tomorrow" in September when I finally get a hold of him. He never shows up or responds to texts or further calls. The photos below are post-lawn work with visible patches and weeds. I had to spend additional monies on top soil, grass seed and water to correct the loss of 50% of the lawn!! If you want an overpriced job not done right, Phil is your guy!!

Philz Landscaping built 2 patios on my property. One is flagstone and the other is pavers with a retaining wall. Both are absolutely beautiful. Working with Phil and his team has been a great experience. I highly recommend this company to anyone looking for reliability, quality, and reasonable pricing.
